Artificial Intelligence (AI) is revolutionizing the way we live and work.
From voice assistants to robots, AI is changing our lives in ways we could have never imagined. However, with its rapid development, there are also concerns about its ethical impact on society and humanity. These considerations about the social and environmental consequences of AI include privacy, security, justice, and fairness.
Indeed, AI‘s ability to make autonomous decisions is one of the most critical and controversial aspects. This is because AI can be programmed to make independent decisions without direct human intervention. While AI decision automation can lead to faster and more precise results, there are also concerns about the lack of human control and the potential for negative consequences. If an AI algorithm makes a wrong or discriminatory decision, those affected could suffer significant harm.
To mitigate these risks, it is important to adopt a governance approach that ensures accountability, transparency, and human oversight of AI decisions. This means ensuring that AI algorithms are trained on balanced data and that decisions are understandable and explainable. To ensure that AI is used ethically and responsibly, an interdisciplinary approach is also necessary. AI involves many different disciplines, such as mathematics, statistics, philosophy, psychology, sociology, and computer science. It is therefore important for experts in these fields to collaborate to develop and apply AI ethically.
Placing humans at the center to ensure the ethical application of this powerful technology should be a key priority for any society interested in AI development, focusing on the fact that it should be used only to enhance the quality of people’s lives. This means training AI on fair and non-discriminatory data, ensuring transparency and accountability in its decision-making processes, respecting human rights and privacy, and ensuring it is used for the common good.
To write this article, we could have used AI, and one could argue that this shortcut would not have been correct or ethical, but we didn’t. Or maybe we did? Well, in this conclusion lies the major differentiator: as AI increasingly assists us in our daily activities, the difference will always be made by humans, as individuals capable of building interpersonal relationships based on mutual trust, positive values, and reputation – all factors not replicable by AI. And even in today’s social and relational contexts, these values are a virtue, especially in how humans use these advanced technologies.
