Often we associate the idea of luxury with words like “excellence,” “craftsmanship,” and “exclusivity,” but in recent years, even this sector has progressively embraced technological innovation, and although they may seem like two distinct worlds, today the luxury market is becoming one of the protagonists of digital transformation. Thanks to the role of new technologies, it is moving towards new frontiers, standing out as one of the sectors that is experimenting the most with innovation.
The causes of this evolution need to be sought not only in the new needs of consumers but also in increasingly crucial issues such as sustainability and circular economy, and above all in the fact that this sector is particularly sensitive to counterfeiting phenomena.
When it comes to new technologies, blockchain stands out thanks to its unique characteristics, offering a new role to authenticity and trust, especially regarding product traceability. This technology is able to trace the product from its origin to the final consumer, thus recognizing its provenance and integrity, while transforming the way customers interact with luxury brands.
It’s no secret that the luxury market has a problem with product counterfeiting, and blockchain proves to be an excellent ally in combating these situations, which can lead to damages not only in terms of image but also financially. In this context, blockchain technology indeed proves to be a highly reliable tool, as it allows the recording of information in a decentralized digital ledger, all protected by encryption. The qualities that result from this, in addition to the immutability of the ledger, include transparency, security, and above all, resistance to fraud and manipulation.
The use case that stands out among others regarding the combination of blockchain and the luxury market is undoubtedly the Aura Blockchain Consortium, founded by luxury giants LVMH, Richemont (specifically Cartier), and Prada. The three groups, which on paper are major competitors in the luxury scene, have decided to collaborate and work together towards the goal of increasing transparency and traceability, giving life to a private blockchain specifically designed for the luxury market.
Aura Blockchain Consortium is born with the mission of establishing a technological standard for the luxury world. With over 23 million products on its blockchain and 40 member brands, the consortium has proven to be open to the entry of new brands and groups, thus honoring the nature of blockchain technology, which by definition is constantly growing. The numerous advantages derived from Aura solutions include the ability to create unique digital identities for products to ensure their authenticity, enable traceability of the entire supply chain to the final consumer (who can also resell the product by transferring ownership), and create NFTs. Among these solutions, Aura SaaS also stands out, which can be accessed via Application Programming Interface (API), and which is able to enable the generation of smart contracts, functionalities related to product ownership, product registration on the blockchain, and content management always linked to the product.
As in the case of Aura, blockchain can be used to host the so-called Digital Product Passports (DPP), a digital tool that records the lifecycle of a product and allows verification of its authenticity. The distinctive characteristics of blockchain technology make it indeed the ideal platform for storing DPPs.
Especially in the luxury world, DPPs prove advantageous for several reasons. They can indeed empower the various figures involved in the processes, including suppliers; they can identify and eliminate any grey markets (where unauthorized resellers operate), combat counterfeit markets, and enable the monitoring of environmental and sustainability performance in general.
It is important to note that DPPs are also involved in a proposal published by the European Commission in 2022 under the Eco-design Regulation for Sustainable Products with a view to reducing environmental impact. This tool could therefore become a standard for several sectors, not just the luxury one.
Thanks to the spread of this technology and all its emerging applications, consumers will be able to make increasingly informed decisions, obtaining certified and detailed information in seconds regarding the authenticity and sustainability of products, which is increasingly demanded nowadays.
When talking about blockchain, we cannot fail to mention NFTs, or Non-Fungible Tokens, which have already found several applications in the luxury market. Thanks to these unique digital assets that can represent the ownership and authenticity of a product, customers can not only purchase the physical item but also its digital counterpart, making the purchasing experience unique and personalized. To enable the connection and act as a bridge between the real and digital world, other technologies and tools such as RFID tags, Internet of Things, and QR codes are often used, allowing the generation of a digital twin of the product in question.
There have been many initiatives in the sector regarding these digital assets. According to a study by CoinGecko, the “Clothing and Luxury Goods” sector ranks first in NFT launches, with 37% of the brands in the study list having introduced such assets.
Among the numerous activities developed in this regard, we can remember the collaboration between the Swiss luxury watchmaker Hublot and the artist Takashi Murakami, who produced 13 NFTs and 13 unique watches, rewarding the first buyers. Always in the realm of watches, Bulgari, by releasing the limited edition “Octo Finissimo Ultra“, included an NFT connected to each of the 10 pieces. Prada instead used NFTs to auction unique virtual clothing through digital fashion shows, creating a new experience for consumers.
The concept of NFTs is often associated with the metaverse; indeed, several luxury brands have experimented in this regard.
Balenciaga, for example, was one of the first to launch an NFT collection in the metaverse, offering wearable accessories for players within Fortnite.
Louis Vuitton even created its own game in the metaverse called “Louis the Game“, which included 30 collectible NFTs created in collaboration with the artist Beeple.
Gucci owns its land on The Sandbox, a metaverse entirely based on blockchain, where the Gucci Vault is located, a concept store for NFTs.
The tokenization of luxury objects manages to combine innovation and tradition, allowing for a new form of collecting. NFTs indeed possess peculiar characteristics that make them particularly suitable for the luxury world. They are unique and therefore scarce, evoking the concept of exclusivity, representing a verifiable and irreversible ownership certificate. Sometimes NFTs also represent benefits such as rewards or exclusive experiences that can involve both the real and virtual worlds.
For luxury players using these tools, the benefits involve:
- increased interest from customers attracted to these unique and collectible assets;
- an enhanced sense of product exclusivity;
- a possible tool to combat counterfeiting;
- the consequent increase in consumer trust.
The opportunities offered by blockchain technology for the luxury market not only drive the sector to implement increasingly responsible practices but also manage to generate a greater sense of reliability, a fundamental factor especially in this sector.
In conclusion, blockchain is revolutionizing the concept of luxury, making it synonymous with values such as transparency and responsibility, achieving a combination of tradition and innovation without altering its essence.
