Which procedure to adopt?

Nanotechnology, or what 4ward360 has created, now more than ever enters our lives to simplify productivity and safeguard our health and our historical and cultural heritage.

Nanotechnology represents a branch of science aimed at studying extremely small technologies, smaller than a nanometer.

Nanotechnologies are part of the study and application of extremely small things and can be used in many scientific fields such as chemistry, biology, physics, materials science, and engineering.

Nanotechnologies are among the exponential technologies of today and tomorrow.

We can give some examples. In the industrial sector, 4ward360 has developed a specific formulation related to press printing where nanotechnology plays a fundamental role because it simplifies the production processes by avoiding the printed support from getting stuck to the press. Or we think about the restoration sector, where it is now possible to keep the treated asset unchanged over time, avoiding wear and external contamination. And why not also think about culture in Italy? We have an extremely important heritage on paper, namely unique historical manuals. Today, nanotechnology allows us to protect our manuals, and it is not said that 4ward360 is not already thinking about something else.

When we started studying some objects on a nanometric scale, we realized that some materials had unusual physical, chemical, and biological characteristics. This has certainly focused further attention on this particular technology that possesses incredible adaptive qualities in many different materials.

Nanoscience and nanotechnology start, as is evident, from a very important concept: the possibility of seeing and controlling individual atoms and molecules. Everything on Earth is made of atoms: the food we eat, the clothes we wear, the buildings and houses we live in, and especially our body.

Nanoscience and nanotechnology start from a very important concept: the ability to see and control individual atoms and molecules. Everything on Earth is made of atoms: the food we eat, the clothes we wear, the buildings and houses we live in, and especially our bodies.

However, something as small as an atom is obviously impossible to see with the naked eye. It was also impossible to see with the technology available to us until a few years ago. The microscopes needed to see things on a nanoscale were invented about 30 years ago, and this is when nanotechnology and 4ward360 started.

What is Nanotechnology?

Nanotechnology represents a new approach based on a deep understanding of the properties of matter on a nanoscale: a nanometer (one billionth of a meter) corresponds to the length of a small molecule. At this scale, matter exhibits various properties, sometimes very surprising, thus bridging the gap between scientific and technical disciplines.

This explains the strongly interdisciplinary nature associated with nanotechnologies.

Nanotechnologies are often described as potentially “disruptive” or “revolutionary” in terms of their impact on industrial production methods. They offer possible solutions to a range of current problems through smaller, lighter, faster, and more effective materials, components, and systems. These possibilities open up new prospects for wealth creation and employment.

Nanotechnologies should also make a fundamental contribution to solving global and environmental problems by enabling the development of products and processes for more specific uses, saving resources, and reducing waste and emissions. Huge strides are being made in the global race towards nanotechnologies.

Europe has invested in many nanoscience programs, developing a solid knowledge base, and now needs to ensure that European industry and society can reap the benefits by developing innovative products and processes.

Nature is important to those involved in nanotechnology. In its four billion years of existence, nature has found surprising solutions to its problems. A peculiar characteristic of living matter is its ability to self-structure down to the finest level, that is, the atomic level.

How does nanotechnology enhance digital and technology more generally?

The nanotechnology products currently on the market are mostly products that have been improved over time in manufacturing processes through the use of these nanotechnologies, giving rise to what are now defined as nanotechnology materials (such as carbon nanotubes, nanocomposite structures or nanoparticles of a particular substance) and what are instead called nanotechnology processes (such as nanopatterning or quantum dots for imaging diagnostics in medicine).

The ability to improve existing products and materials, creating smaller components and materials with better performance at a lower cost, will lead to a rapid growth in the number of companies using “nanoproducts” in the coming years, bringing numerous investments and further accelerations in the development of these technologies to the market.

What solutions does nanotechnology provide?

There are several solutions, all aimed at providing a solution. For example, in the mold industry sector, we have achieved unique and exclusive results. An example product from our company, for instance, has been solving the problem of detachment of the printed material after the press, with a decrease in costs, zero defect margin, and an increase in production.

Another example concerns the infrastructure sector: thanks to nanocomposites, we have brought innovation to the construction and maintenance of bridges. In fact, we were invited as speakers to discuss the possibility of constructing the Bridge over the Strait.

On that occasion, we brought new materials that will contribute to the holding and stability performance of the infrastructure in its complexity, “Towards a revival for the Italian economy.”

What results have already been achieved?

Nanotechnology has fascinated various industrial, construction, and institutional environments. The real success is being able to offer a solution to every request that is made to us. We consider ourselves a bit like tailors of nanotechnology, so it is easily understandable what results we obtain every time the client solves their problem.

The objective of this activity is to transfer technology, trigger innovation, improve and protect surfaces in art and industry with the same logic because both deserve proper preservation, valorization, and transmission to the future.

What are the goals of the project in relation to Italian and international institutions?

It’s not always easy to reach these organizations, unfortunately there are many obstacles to overcome. I could make a very long list, but the worst and perhaps the most frequent is the lack of willingness to change.

Change is scary: for example, those who manage a tender don’t want to try new materials that they often don’t know. As a result, every opportunity for collaboration is immediately eliminated. Another drawback is that in cases like this, there is no possible update of the various specifications with the inclusion of new materials and new technologies, because obviously no one knows and/or no one wants to modify the documents, etc…

The current government talks about innovation, development, design, etc. and yet I have never had the opportunity to be visible to their eyes as a world exclusive company considering both the technology used and our know-how.

I believe that we are not yet ready to tackle such an important issue, stepping outside the box is sometimes difficult even for those in command, despite the willingness to direct us all towards innovation, design, etc…, I believe that a good job can only be done when our politicians confront us to evaluate together a development path for all of us.

Today many universities have a specialization in nanotechnology, then everything stops, precisely because an important link is missing, the union between private and institution.

What is the added value of being able to boast an innovative brand like 4ward360?

I would say it’s a dream called 4ward360, a project wanted at all costs, now a brand with a great future ahead.

I am aware that the opportunity I am being given ensures that I never lose my focus, both in making Nanotechnology a tool of evolution in respect of community well-being, and in bringing the excellence of our country that never fails in terms of ingenuity around the world.

Can you talk about your work as a woman expert in nanotechnology?

My experience in the field of Nanotechnology began from the first time I heard about this solution. I immediately imagined how nature is capable of giving the solution to everything or almost everything: the problem arises when we don’t have enough eyes to see the solutions it offers, when our ego leads us to no longer consider simple things.

Nature teaches us a lot, and that’s why I decided to venture into something truly unique, completely organic and that could reproduce what nature does: natural conservation by making surfaces SMART.

Can you focus your assignments?

Interesting question: it is always thought that being a female entrepreneur, reaching where I am, is perhaps the result of favors or favoritism.

I must say that it is not so precisely because at my own risk I have always remained faithful to my deepest self, to my personal ethics that is based on fundamental principles that are respect for the work of others and respect for the rules that regulate every type of project in which my Nanotechnology is applied.

I am talking about institutions, the territory, the environment, and those who will physically operate on that project. I have never pulled back, every new challenge is motivating; the result that systematically comes out victorious is never a goal but a piece of how Nanotechnology can be functional in every field of application and therefore becomes a stimulus.

Obviously, this has led to creating not only an avant-garde entrepreneurial figure, especially for a woman in a predominantly male field, but it has also contributed significantly (and this is evident from the numerous appearances on the web) to strengthening the public aspect that cannot always be easily digested.

Visibility creates both success and, on the other hand, also fear. Sabrina’s goal is to make and provide a concrete service to technological development (in multiple fields) and to give our country the right visibility; becoming a public figure, famous, on the contrary, does not fall within the objectives.

Blockchain and Nanotechnologies

I believe that today more than ever it is necessary to rely on new technologies, even in the nanotechnology sector, often modified or commercialized with products that are not actually their own.

Let’s take an example: how can the combination of blockchain (explained at the link here) and nanotechnology help us fight counterfeiting? There are nanomaterials called quantum dots that are semiconductor particles on a nanometric scale that possess remarkable optical and electrical properties and are extremely useful. They measure from 1,000 to 100,000 atoms (about 10,000 dots would fit the diameter of a human hair) and generate light when energy is applied or generate energy when light is applied.

These quantum dots can be finely tuned to emit predetermined wavelengths of light (both in the visible and non-visible spectrum) with the ability to create billions of unique optical signatures.

These identities are impossible to copy or clone, resulting in products improved by them being verifiable as original and not counterfeit items. When the quantum dot signature of a product is scanned (via a handheld scanner or an app on a smartphone), a digital representation is created and stored on our secure and tamper-proof blockchain platform (explained at the link here).

Today, therefore, the entire commercial supply chain has the opportunity to be monitored and certified, completely eliminating counterfeiters.
