Introduction

Digital innovation is a phenomenon that is revolutionizing the world we live in, influencing every aspect of our daily lives. Among the many innovations, Blockchain, cryptocurrencies, and the idea of a digital Euro are emerging as protagonists in this intricate landscape. However, the direction these technologies will take is crucial for our future: they could either be tools of empowerment or control.

Digital innovation, if managed in a decentralized manner and through open-source services, can become a driver of progress and inclusivity. On the other hand, if concentrated in the hands of a few, it could lead to massive and intrusive control over the lives of citizens.

The importance of keeping digital innovation open and accessible to all is evident when considering developments such as Blockchain, a technology that has proven to be truly revolutionary when decentralized and distributed.

The Blockchain Revolution

The birth of Blockchain is attributed to the creators of Bitcoin. The Timechain, the blockchain underlying Bitcoin, represents a significant step towards decentralization. Indeed, it operates without a single central authority, ensuring transaction security through a distributed consensus process.

The fundamental difference from other blockchains lies in the total absence of companies or central entities that could exert control over it or shut down the network. While many other blockchains have companies or organizations behind them, the Timechain is driven by the collective force of its community.

Bitcoin and the Pursuit of Privacy

Bitcoin stands out as the most well-known cryptocurrency, but its significance goes beyond mere market value. It was born as digital cash with the aim of being a medium of exchange. At the heart of its founders’ idea – the mysterious Satoshi Nakamoto and the cypherpunk group that helped in its creation – was the desire to eliminate the third party entity that handles a payment and holds the power to block it. The term digital cash stems from this: if A gives 10 euros in cash to B for a service, donation, or other purpose, this exchange is known only to A and B if they don’t talk about it with anyone; with the advent of digital bank transactions, however, the third party, namely the bank, knows that A has given 10 euros to B and, if the recipient is not to its liking, could legally and unilaterally reject and cancel the transaction. Bitcoin overcomes this phase because the transaction is anonymous and without third parties that can block it.

This has led many to believe that Bitcoin was created for illicit purposes, but that’s not the case: if we put a curtain in front of the window, it doesn’t mean we’re engaging in illicit activities in our home but rather, we want to protect our privacy from prying eyes. Similarly, Bitcoin offers users the ability to protect their financial privacy, without necessarily engaging in illegal activities.

The US dollar has been the most used currency for illicit activities over the past decades, yet rightly, no one has ever pointed to the dollar as the cause of these activities: if A buys a large, sharp knife to cut meat, they are using the knife properly; if B buys the same knife to harm or kill another person and commits a crime, the blame is not on the knife but on B who used it for an illicit purpose. In short, it’s always the human mind that decides how to use a particular means, and it’s not the means that determine human behavior.

The Difference Between Bitcoin and Other Cryptocurrencies

We’ve mentioned that Bitcoin was born as a medium of exchange and digital cash. In recent years, however, some have also defined it as a store of value (digital gold), as well as a speculative asset.

After its inception, thousands of cryptocurrencies have been created specifically to enrich some developer at the expense of some unfortunate who is unaware of where they are investing their money. Many of these so-called altcoins often present themselves as highly speculative investments, projects without solid foundations, if not outright scams (Ponzi schemes), fueling the negative perception of the sector.

Some of these altcoins can even contribute to gambling addiction (pathological gambling), exploiting market volatility to attract investors into a risky spiral. Furthermore, decentralization, a key principle of Bitcoin, may be compromised in some blockchains, highlighting the need for careful evaluation before investing or using one that is not properly secure and distributed.

Use of Blockchains in Various Sectors: Possibilities and Risks

Blockchain technology has found significant applications in various sectors beyond the financial world. It offers a distributed and immutable ledger that can be used to track and authenticate a wide range of information, from product provenance to the entire supply chain.

Blockchain can improve healthcare data management, ensuring security, authorized sharing, and traceability of medical information; it can simplify and expedite real estate transactions, reducing costs and improving transparency; it can be used to track the production and distribution of renewable energy, facilitating energy network management; it can make insurance policy management more efficient, simplifying claims verification and registration; it can be used for academic credential verification and to improve transparency in diploma and certificate validation, and various other uses including electronic voting and gaming.

In the food sector, blockchain can be used to monitor every stage of a product’s production and distribution, ensuring transparency and traceability. However, it’s important to note that blockchain alone does not completely solve the problem of fraud; if a product is mistakenly entered into the system, it will persist along the entire supply chain. In this context, artificial intelligence (AI) can play a crucial role: by implementing machine learning algorithms, AI can analyze data from the blockchain and identify anomalies or discrepancies, thus helping to detect and correct errors.

The synergistic integration of blockchain and artificial intelligence can improve the security and efficiency of processes in various sectors, mitigating the risks associated with incorrect information recording in the blockchain.

Digital Euro: A Currency That Simplifies Life or a Potential Risk?

The digital Euro is an ambitious project that could lead to a revolution in the financial systems of the European Union. However, the proposal to base the digital Euro on a blockchain completely managed by the European Central Bank (ECB) raises concerns related to centralized control.

If the ECB were to become the sole true owner of the EU currency, this could mean an even greater loss of monetary autonomy for member states and their governments in favor of a private entity. The risk is that, in the not-too-distant future, control over funds could be used as a tool of coercion against those who do not conform to the interests of the current government, which would then be increasingly subservient, if not entirely managed, by banking authorities.

An example of this could be recalled in the context of truckers’ protests in Canada, where the government froze bank accounts in response to demonstrations following COVID-19 restrictions¹. This episode raises questions about the vulnerability of a centralized financial system and the potential abuse of power.

Balancing Progress and Control

In conclusion, digital innovation represented by Blockchain, cryptocurrencies, and the Digital Euro can bring extraordinary benefits, but only if managed in an open and distributed manner.

Timechain is a tangible example of how decentralization can be the key to ensuring security and freedom in the new digital era. Bitcoin, with its philosophy of privacy and decentralization, demonstrates that cryptocurrencies can serve a broader purpose beyond mere financial speculation.

The path towards the digital Euro must be treaded carefully, so that it doesn’t turn into a means of invasive control, and our money cannot be blocked with a simple click, as happened in Canada.

The challenge for the future is to find a balance between digital innovation as a tool for progress and the risk of centralized control. Only through open dialogue, transparency, and public awareness can we ensure that these technologies serve society as a whole, rather than a few powerful central actors.
