Open-air museums, the taste of a varied food and wine culture, an art of hospitality in which we are masters. With such emotional and economic impact, how and why insert Blockchain technology in tourism?

With the entry into the new Informatics era, also known as “Internet of Value,” tourism players are facing an epochal change and opportunities for previously unthinkable enhancement. Blockchain, in this new computer era, introduces the possibility of developing Decentralized Applications (DAPP), making Immutable Transactions and removing the presence of unnecessary intermediaries and many other services, transforming Hotellerie and travel into a pleasant, easy, smooth, and obstacle-free mode.

The tourist stay:

Thanks to this Digital Decentralized revolution, already underway, the tourist stay acquires such interactivity as to be able to offer guests the privilege of real security at all times. With this technology, tourists can interact directly with sector operators (hotels, travel agencies, and tour operators) by eliminating intermediaries and cutting costs.

All of this is achieved without the need for third-party management (i.e., Centralized) and is protected from external interference or tampering. A shift that will change the way of travel and more. Sector operators could create ad hoc tourism packages, leveraging this Digital and Decentralized Ecosystem.

The tangible advantage brought about by such technology would positively enter not only the hands of tourist travelers but also and above all those of intermediaries, such as tour operators: especially in a “particular” period like the one we are experiencing, blockchain in tourism and its DAPP would be a considerable competitive advantage for those working in the sector.

Blockchain & tourism:

Blockchain.

Let’s briefly see how Blockchain technology works, a system based on ensuring the correctness of information, on shared digital records.

In this sort of public digital ledger, information is recorded anonymously and permanently. Transaction records, within the ledger, are protected using Cryptography, and once the information has been recorded on the Blockchain, it is resistant to changes, meaning that data cannot be modified.

Therefore, the guarantee of the security of this Digital Decentralized Network comes from the fact that data is distributed among all Nodes (of the chain); if the Nodes were not independent, no one could guarantee the veracity of the data.

That is, when information moves within the Blockchain, there is no centralized guarantor server: network nodes contact each other automatically, and once a sufficient number of them have given the go-ahead, information is first authorized and then distributed over the entire network over time. That’s why this technology is Decentralized, meaning that information is not stored in one place.

This prevents manipulation and makes all data transparent. The recording of information is shared by many people through a Network of Nodes, which offers further advantages in terms of security since there is no central point of error or vulnerability.

Tourism.

Blockchain technology in tourism offers enormous potential in terms of reducing the involvement of third parties, improving security, including cybersecurity, improving transaction speed and ease, accessing important information from anywhere and at any time.

This industry is extremely sensitive to customer sentiment as it directly impacts the emotions and desires of travelers.

This technology will contribute to improving tourist experiences (building loyalty), making internal processes of operators more efficient, and contributing to elevating the overall value of the Travel & Hospitality brand.

Transactions.

Obviously, Blockchain technology in tourism could play a fundamental role in simplifying and certifying payments and transactions. Currently, this can be a bit complicated, especially when it comes to overseas facilities.

With the use of Blockchain, the entire process can be streamlined, sped up, and made more transparent, increasing trust between travelers and tourism operators.

Focus on payments: secure transactions in cryptocurrency such as Bitcoin or Ethereum are allowed, bank payments can be simplified, and associated costs for hotels can be reduced. There are hundreds of cryptocurrency ATMs around the world that can be placed inside or in the immediate vicinity of hotel facilities. In addition, there are dozens of cryptocurrency POS systems that can simplify transactions and make stays more enjoyable.

Loyalty.

Continuing with the PLUS, we must overcome the old and worn-out logic of loyalty points, opening up new scenarios for customer loyalty through reward schemes with the release of tokens, which can be used to take advantage of services offered by lodging facilities.

They are an important part of generating rewards, and Blockchain technology in tourism can improve the quality of loyalty programs by simplifying the process, making it easier for customers to access and redeem their points. Rewards can be distributed through digital fan tokens that could be used anywhere, anytime, while security benefits would reduce fraud. Blockchain technology provides a solution that allows travelers to seamlessly use loyalty points earned from air travel to make purchases in airports, rent a car, or stay in a hotel of their choice.

Consider a context where a loyal member of a hospitality chain has affiliations with airlines, car rental companies, or a preferred coffee chain (here, Blockchain technology in tourism comes into play, helping commercial partners come together to offer advanced experiences); if the hotel chain, airline, car rental agency, and coffee chain collaborate through Blockchain, they offer the customer a whole range of options to redeem loyalty points from any of the partners in the network. I would define it as true interoperability of services between partners!

Logistics.

Monitoring of luggage and personal effects of customers, too often a painful issue for them, hit by intrusive intrusions and incidents along the way (losses), damage, and continuous inconvenience that undermine hospitality itself, can find application in this technology. In fact, the use of Blockchain in tourism extends to things like baggage tracking: from the boarding airport to the final destination and vice versa, i.e., the return home. Generally, a traveler’s luggage changes hands many times during a journey, which can lead to logistical problems.

The decentralized nature of Blockchain, its security in traceability and traceability, can allow operators and travelers to easily share and access related data, so as to constantly track and verify the exact location and safety of their personal effects.

KYC.

The term KYC refers to the registration and identification of travelers (KYC: Know Your Customer). When bureaucratic checks fail, adopting a blockchain solution in tourism for identity management purposes (Onboarding) proves to be a winning choice.

Raise your hand if you haven’t struggled when booking online, it’s very frustrating to navigate through misinformation and hidden costs, repetitive options, and various inaccuracies. To solve these complications, significantly reducing the timing for authenticity checks, the Blockchain stores customer ID details (Identity) within itself in a standardized and decentralized format, allowing travel agencies and tour operators to retrieve and verify a customer’s identity at any time, from anywhere.

In this way, registration (check-in, check-out) can take place quickly and in absolute respect for privacy and compliance with GDPR. Simplifying these operations for the customer, streamlining document verification procedures, and improving KYC are objectives that technology supports (Compliance), thanks to its features of immutability and transparency, creating a digital environment in which data security is maintained and respected.

In addition, the blockchain allows the correct existence, creation date (timestamping), origin, and content of any document, contract, license, property, or event of traveling customers to be notarized and certified in a digitalized form automatically and unequivocally.

By implementing and improving the use cases of this technology, operators in the hotel industry will be able to generate smart IDs and personalize their offer, including as a smart room key. Guests can simply press the virtual unlock button on their smartphone or any device (after downloading the relevant app) to access their booked room. If, for example, there is damage in the room or the minibar has been emptied, the smart contract will automatically withdraw the funds from the guest’s deposit account even after check-out. No paper documentation throughout the transaction cycle. This is called: Digitization of hospitality.

This digital infrastructure, a new decentralized and peer-to-peer interaction paradigm, creates a trusted and secure ecosystem as proof of the biblical “Don’t Trust, Verify” (Digital Mantra), perfect in this Hospitality sector. It should make the Traveling system more efficient, with the certainty of a verified logistics chain in an innovative and efficient way.

Conclusions.

In conclusion, let’s prepare for technological experiences applied to this macro sector (which involves multiple actors), thanks to the potential uses of blockchain in tourism where existing realities and startups in Italy and around the world are implementing project ideas to welcome both technological and non-technological travelers, accompanying them on memorable stays.

Welcome to the future of hospitality!

Introduction: Italy is universally recognized as the country of “Great Beauty.” It seems difficult to add value to the experience of a tourist who experiences the “sweet life” and the encounter with our historical, artistic, and landscape heritage, largely protected by UNESCO.
