THE FRAGILITY OF EUROPE’S VALUE CHAINS – AND WHY IT IS DANGEROUS

European competitiveness is weakened by three strategic dependencies: generative AI from the USA, hardware and robotics from China, and cloud services and infrastructure from international Big Tech companies.
At a time when AI is critical infrastructure, this dependency limits competitiveness, weakens businesses, exposes them to risks, and creates industrial vulnerabilities.

2. THE ROLE OF APPLIED AI: EUROPE’S REAL OPPORTUNITY

Europe can build its identity around applied AI: robotics, automation, and intelligent production systems. Germany accounts for 37% of EU robotics. Italy is Europe’s second-largest manufacturing nation and a global leader in precision mechanics.
The AI of the future will be hybrid: software + machine.

3. ITALY IS NOT (YET) A TECHNOLOGICAL HUB — BUT IT HAS THE CONDITIONS TO BECOME ONE

Italy does not compete in the race for Big Tech, but it has a unique industrial base: the second-largest manufacturing sector in Europe, 212 robots per 10,000 workers (above France and the UK), and more than 100 billion euros in the mechanical sector alone.
The country excels in physical high-tech.

4. THE VISION: ITALY AS THE INDUSTRIAL BRIDGE BETWEEN AMERICA AND ASIA

AI competition is bipolar: the USA dominates software, China dominates hardware. An industrial bridge is needed to integrate models, robotics, components, and standards.
Italy can be this hub: districts, production flexibility, mechatronic expertise, and a strategic position within the EU.
Not a European Silicon Valley. A European Factory Valley.

5. FIVE AREAS WHERE ITALY CAN LEAD

Advanced robotics and automation

Industrial computer vision

Edge AI and autonomous machines

Software–plant integration

Mechatronics for SMEs

6. THE THREE MEASURES NECESSARY TO ACHIEVE THIS VISION

Vertical industrial policies

Companies that scale, not merely survive

European standards for smart manufacturing

CONCLUSION – THE AI GAME WILL BE PLAYED IN FACTORIES

Generative AI has captured all the attention, but the real revolution will be AI + robotics + industry.
Europe can be autonomous.
Italy can be a key player.
The world needs a third actor between the USA and China.
The future of European AI – real, industrial, productive – can emerge precisely from the most underestimated place: Italy.

INTRODUCTION – A continent rich in talent but lacking a unified technological direction Europe is entering the age of Artificial Intelligence with a clear paradox: it has some of the best researchers in the world, yet it lacks a defined technological identity. The United States controls more than 60% of advanced generative models; China dominates over […]

[683
794,820,798,1053,183
1469
post-25117","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-tech-en","tag-ai-eng","tag-artificial-intelligence","tag-businesses","tag-cloud-en","tag-pos-en
["GET
