This year is remembered for the global financial crisis triggered by the collapse of the real estate bubble in the United States, known as the Subprime Mortgage Crisis. (Source: Wikipedia)

Within months, the crisis spread worldwide, causing an unprecedented recession and deeply undermining trust in banks and traditional financial systems.
Images of desperate people outside failed banks and the collapse of giants like Lehman Brothers remain vivid in the collective memory. Many began to ask: “What does money really represent? Does it have real value, or is it just an illusion?”

In this climate of distrust and uncertainty, in 2008, a mysterious entity known as Satoshi Nakamoto presented the world with a revolutionary vision: Bitcoin, the first decentralized electronic payment system.

Who is Satoshi Nakamoto?

To this day, more than 15 years later, we still don’t have a clear answer. We don’t know if it was an individual or a group of people; the only certainty is that Satoshi Nakamoto is a pseudonym used to protect the identity of Bitcoin’s creator.
There are some theories, though. Some believe Nakamoto was linked to the Cypherpunk movement, born in the 1990s and inspired by libertarian and cyberpunk thinking but focused on digital privacy and the use of cryptography to protect individual freedom in the internet era.

Like cyberpunks, who imagine dystopian futures dominated by technology and corporate control, cypherpunks fear a world of mass surveillance and centralization. Their response? Promote tools and technologies (like encryption and cryptocurrencies) to ensure autonomy and resistance to government or corporate control.

This movement had already spawned projects like Hashcash and B-money, which are considered precursors to Bitcoin. The dream of a decentralized financial system was always at its core.

One key aspect of Satoshi Nakamoto was the intent to leave Bitcoin in the hands of the community. After launching the project and building its foundation, Nakamoto disappeared in 2010, leaving development and management to programmers and supporters around the world.

His final message. (Source: Bitcointalk.org)

The Bitcoin Whitepaper: A Revolutionary Vision

In October 2008, Nakamoto published the whitepaper titled “Bitcoin: A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System.”
This nine-page document answered a crucial question:
“Can we create a trust-based economic system without a third-party intermediary?”
Apparently, yes.

Bitcoin is exactly that: the first global-scale monetary/economic experiment designed to return control of money to individuals and eliminate every intermediary, central bank, or government.
To achieve this, Nakamoto combined several existing technologies, such as cryptography, distributed ledgers, and the peer-to-peer model.

Bitcoin as Currency and Protocol

Most people think Bitcoin is just a currency. Others see it as a speculative asset. These individuals, unfortunately, have failed.
They haven’t understood how Bitcoin works and haven’t taken the time to seek answers. Because of their laziness and skepticism—just like during the early days of the internet—they’ll be left behind by what, in my opinion, is the most important revolution of the 21st century.

Bitcoin (with a capital “B”) is first and foremost an open-source protocol that allows users to exchange value securely, transparently, and in a decentralized manner. Built on top of this protocol is bitcoin (lowercase “b”), its native currency—still the most important, widely used, and valuable cryptocurrency.

But Bitcoin is much more: it’s a new economic paradigm that challenges centralized monetary control.

Main features of Bitcoin include:

Decentralization: no central authority controls the network;

Transparency: all transactions are publicly visible;

Security: cryptography ensures the safety of funds;

Pseudonymity: no user identity is required for transactions;

Global accessibility: anyone with an internet connection can participate.

How Bitcoin Works: The Role of the Blockchain

One of the technologies that makes Bitcoin work is the Blockchain, often described as a “distributed ledger.”
The blockchain is a chain of data blocks, each containing a set of transactions. Every block is linked to the previous one through a cryptographic signature, forming an immutable chain.

The blockchain is distributed across thousands of nodes—computers that participate in the Bitcoin network. This means there is no single point of control or vulnerability. Each node maintains a copy of the ledger, making the network resilient to failures or attacks.

Miners and Transactions

Bitcoin transactions are verified by miners—users who dedicate their computer power to solving complex mathematical problems.
This process, known as mining, validates transactions and creates new bitcoins.
When a miner solves a problem, a new block is added to the blockchain. In return, the miner receives a reward (called a block reward) along with transaction fees paid by users.

Halving and Bitcoin Scarcity

Bitcoin is designed to be scarce. Its total supply is limited to 21 million units, and every four years the number of new bitcoins created is halved in a process called halving.
This makes Bitcoin a deflationary asset, increasing its value over time.

To date, around 19 million bitcoins have been mined. Based on the current hashrate (the network’s total computing power), all bitcoins are expected to be mined by 2140.
After reaching the maximum supply, the network will continue to exist and grow, but miners will be rewarded only through user-paid transaction fees.

Bitcoin as a Tool for Economic Freedom

Bitcoin is not just technology—it’s a social and political movement.
It offers people a way to escape centralized control by banks and governments.
In countries with unstable economies or rapidly depreciating currencies, like Argentina and Turkey, Bitcoin has become a lifeline.

In traditional finance, control over money is concentrated in the hands of a few institutions like central banks and large corporations. This creates systemic risk—as the 2008 crisis demonstrated.
Bitcoin, instead, distributes power among all network participants, eliminating the need for intermediaries.

Today, in 2025, Bitcoin has evolved far beyond a simple tech experiment. It is a store of value, a global payment system, and a foundation for new applications.
However, mass adoption is still a challenge. The key? Educating people about how Bitcoin works and showing its benefits as the basis for a new decentralized economy.

Conclusion: Bitcoin in Our Hands

Bitcoin was born out of a financial crisis, as a response to the flaws of the traditional system.
In just over a decade, it has revolutionized how we think about money—offering a vision of freedom, democracy, and decentralization.

The future of Bitcoin is in our hands. It’s up to each of us to decide whether to embrace this revolution or stay anchored to the old system.

Bitcoin is not just a currency.
It’s a new form of freedom.

The purpose of this article is to introduce Bitcoin, starting from its origins and the historical context of its creation, all the way to the technology that makes it unique and the socio-economic implications that follow.If I had to choose three words to describe what Bitcoin is, I would use the following: 2008 and the […]

[1084,525
800,170,62,826,830
1379
post-24294","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-blockchain-crypto-news-en","category-real-applications-en","tag-bitcoin-en","tag-blockchain-en","tag-ledger","tag-mining-en","tag-satoshi-nakamoto-en
["GET
