Insert the right amount of coins, press the corresponding button, and you’ll receive your drink, without the need for further interactions.

Why are Smart Contracts revolutionizing the world of contracts?

Simple, being built and distributed on the blockchain, they leverage all the benefits of this technology, providing advantages that the traditional stipulation of contracts would never be able to offer.

Let’s see together what characterizes these “unbreakable promises”:

Improved Transparency

Every detail of the contract is visible and verifiable by all interested parties with total transparency, promoting a level of trust and openness never seen before.
This ensures that all transactions are executed exactly as agreed, without room for misunderstandings or manipulations.

For example, if a user wanted to understand how a particular operation will be executed, they would simply need to consult the source code of the protocol to find out.

Unmatched Security

The combination of advanced encryption techniques and the decentralized nature of the blockchain makes the operations executed extremely secure.

However, it is important to remember that making mistakes and/or lacking precision in writing a smart contract can significantly compromise its integrity and make it vulnerable to external attacks. For this reason, it is essential that the design and programming of these contracts are entrusted only to experienced and competent developers in the field.

Efficiency and Cost Reduction

The ability to automate complex operations significantly reduces the time and costs associated with contract management. For example, a traditional contract that takes weeks for negotiation and execution can be completed in minutes, without the need for intermediaries such as notaries or lawyers, thus also reducing associated costs.

Automation and Error Minimization

The automation provided by smart contracts eliminates much of the risk of human error, common in manual and complex processes. A concrete example is found in the insurance sector, where the use of these tools could automate policy payments in case of verifiable events, such as flight delays, ensuring that compensations are disbursed quickly and correctly.

Interoperability and Programmability

One of the most significant benefits of smart contracts is their ability to interact with other contracts and systems within the same blockchain network; this allows the development of complex applications that can interact with various sectors and services, greatly expanding the possibilities of use.

How do these theoretical benefits translate into concrete solutions for everyday problems?

The potential applications of this technology in the real world are endless.

Unfortunately, due to space constraints, I can’t list them all, otherwise, the article would turn into a book, but here are some concrete examples of how Smart Contracts could be applied in real contexts:

Property and Real Estate Management: Imagine buying or renting a house with a fully automated process, where the transfer of ownership or access to the property occurs only after all contractual conditions have been met, eliminating delays, fraud, and costs associated with intermediaries.

Supply Chain and Logistics: In the logistics sector, smart contracts can track the entire path of a product, from production to final delivery, ensuring the authenticity and compliance of goods, with a significant impact on reducing counterfeiting and optimizing processes.

Voting and Decentralized Governance: The use in electronic voting systems would ensure the security and immutability of votes, offering a transparent and unalterable method for public elections or business decisions, eliminating the risk of manipulation.

Financial Services and DeFi: In the world of finance, smart contracts are able to create new forms of financial services, allowing loans, investments, and other services without the intermediation of traditional banks, thus reducing costs and expanding access to financial services.

Entertainment Industry: Smart contracts could allow artists to receive compensation directly and transparently for each stream or download of their works, revolutionizing the way copyright is managed and distributed in the sector.

To date, these smart contracts have already marked the birth and development of several important technologies: from simple fungible tokens to NFTs, up to DAOs (Decentralized Autonomous Organizations) and complex DeFi (Decentralized Finance) protocols.

Remember the McDonald’s Monopoly scandal?

A marketing initiative inspired by the famous game offered customers of the renowned fast-food chain the chance to receive stickers to participate in cash prize draws.

However, this opportunity was never real due to internal fraud: an employee of the company tasked with managing the game stole the winning stickers, redistributing them to a group of accomplices who then redeemed them to share the prize.

A nice scam, right?

All this happened because the game had been entrusted to a single central entity, which had the power to manipulate it and control all aspects of the process.

Now, imagine if the game had been managed through a contract deposited on a decentralized network.

This would have randomly and automatically dispensed stickers to fast food customers, giving everyone a real chance to win. After that, the owners of the winning stickers, by interacting with the contract, could safely redeem their prize without having to resort to third parties.

Through this ecosystem, everything would have been conducted fairly and transparently, abolishing the risk of fraud and internal manipulation of the game.

Conclusion

In conclusion, Smart Contracts are true digital contracts that leverage all the strengths that blockchain technology offers to execute operations securely, efficiently, transparently, and decentralized.

As we have seen in the example of McDonald’s, these smart contracts can prevent the risk of fraud and manipulation and ensure the execution of operations safely and efficiently.

Although there are several challenges that still need to be addressed today, the continuous and rapid evolution of this technology progresses more and more every day, and I am confident that the impact it will have on everyday life will be significant.

The road ahead is as promising as it is challenging, but one thing is certain:

Smart Contracts have the potential to change the world.

<div style="height:30px" aria-hidden="true"
