Ethereum, the second-largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization, is on the verge of gaining new legitimacy with the approval of eight Spot Ethereum ETFs in the United States. This significant step, expected for Tuesday, July 23, will allow institutional and retail investors to purchase Ethereum through a traditional and regulated investment vehicle. But what does this move really entail, and what impact could it have on the market?

The Importance of SEC Approval and Ethereum’s Maturity

SEC Approval

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is set to approve a series of new Spot Ethereum ETFs. These funds, expected to start trading on July 23, represent a significant opportunity for both retail and institutional investors. For many, these Spot Ethereum ETFs provide a more familiar and secure way to invest in cryptocurrencies compared to traditional methods like cryptocurrency exchanges or peer-to-peer transactions.

Ethereum’s Maturity

Launched in 2015, Ethereum is one of the most mature and widely used blockchains in the world, developed specifically for decentralized applications. With one of the highest numbers of active developers and strong network activity, Ethereum stands out for its robustness and continuous innovation. Its native cryptocurrency, ether (ETH), has a market capitalization of $400 billion and is the only token besides Bitcoin to see futures contracts traded on the CME exchange.

The Potential of Spot Ethereum ETFs and Future Prospects

Potential of Spot Ethereum ETFs

The approval of Spot Ethereum ETFs is seen as a legitimizing force for the cryptocurrency, with the potential to increase its price. Spot Bitcoin ETFs, launched in the United States in January after a lengthy regulatory process, have been a success, with 11 funds accumulating a market capitalization of nearly $60 billion. Many market experts believe that Spot Ethereum ETFs could see similar interest from both retail and institutional investors.

According to Thomas Perfumo, head of strategy at Kraken, these Spot Ethereum ETF products significantly validate the legitimacy of cryptocurrencies as an asset class. Even those who criticized cryptocurrencies five years ago are now creating products around them, recognizing the real demand behind this sector.

Future Prospects

The approval of Spot Ethereum ETFs could pave the way for similar products for other cryptocurrencies. Matthew Sigel, head of digital asset research at VanEck, believes that these Spot Ethereum ETFs could facilitate the creation of funds for other cryptocurrencies. However, most market observers maintain that the launch of ETFs for other cryptocurrencies, like Solana, is unlikely in the short term.

What Are Spot Ethereum ETFs and Who Buys Them

Definition of Spot Ethereum ETFs

Spot Ethereum ETFs track the price of Ethereum’s native token, offering a simplified way for investors to introduce assets like ether into their retirement accounts or for institutions to develop trading strategies on cryptocurrencies. ETFs are relatively new investment products that first appeared in the early 1990s but have quickly become among the most popular. They allow investors to gain exposure to securities or commodities with lower fees compared to buying individual stocks.

Who Buys Spot Ethereum ETFs?

ETFs are popular financial products among both institutional and retail investors. Although many institutions have purchased Spot Bitcoin ETFs, the market has been dominated by retail traders. According to Bitwise research, 70-80% of assets under management in Bitcoin funds are generated by retail traders.

Ethereum attracts a different type of investor compared to Bitcoin, often seen as “hard money” or an inflation hedge. ETH also has lower brand recognition. Nonetheless, Spot Ethereum ETFs will likely attract a broader pool of investors, increasing liquidity and expanding network adoption.

Capital Inflow Projections and Fee War

Capital Inflow Projections

Estimates for capital inflows into Spot Ethereum ETFs vary considerably. Perfumo predicts net inflows of $750 million to $1 billion per month for the first five to six months. This forecast aligns with Citigroup’s projection of $4.7 billion to $5.4 billion over the first six months of trading. However, the bank believes that Spot Ethereum ETFs will see only 30-35% of the inflows compared to Spot Bitcoin ETFs.

Bitwise, one of the companies launching a Spot Ethereum ETF, is significantly more optimistic, predicting inflows of $15 billion by May 2025. Traders have already purchased ether call options for over $20 million, expecting the funds to drive ETH’s price to new highs.

Fee War Among Spot Ethereum ETFs

Competition among issuers has led to a reduction in management fees for Bitcoin funds, and the same appears to be happening for Spot Ethereum ETFs. Franklin Templeton will charge a 0.19% management fee, VanEck 0.20%, 21Shares 0.21%, and Invesco 0.25%. Grayscale will charge 2.5% for its flagship ETHE product but only 0.15% for the “mini fund.”

BlackRock will launch its iShares fund with an expense ratio of 0.25%, planning to reduce it to 0.12% when it reaches $2.5 billion in assets. Bitwise promises to charge no fee for six months until it reaches $500 million.

Leading Issuers and Staking of Spot Ethereum ETFs

Leading Issuers of Spot Ethereum ETFs

Eight companies are expected to receive SEC approval, including ARK & 21 Shares, BlackRock, Fidelity, Franklin Templeton, Grayscale, Hashdex, Invesco, and VanEck. Some of these companies already have Spot Bitcoin ETF products. Among them, at least four have chosen Coinbase as the custodian.

VanEck uses Gemini for clearing infrastructure and custody, while Fidelity, with extensive experience in Bitcoin markets, self-custodies its ether. The funds will be listed on Nasdaq, Cboe BZX Funds, and NYSE Arca.

Staking of Spot Ethereum ETFs

Ethereum is secured by a process called staking, which rewards anyone willing to lock up ETH needed to validate transactions. This offers a form of passive income with an estimated annual yield of 3.2%. Staking can be done individually or through third parties, such as a liquid staking protocol or exchange.

Many companies initially proposed staking the underlying ETH in their funds to earn revenue and pay rewards to buyers, but the SEC raised concerns about this practice. As part of the approval process, some companies removed the staking component from their funds.

With growing interest and optimistic capital inflow projections, Spot Ethereum ETFs could have a significant impact on the cryptocurrency market.
